Wat
Phra That Hariphunchai
Lamphun
Originally it was a Royal Palace of Cham Devi’s dynasty, according
to King Athitayaraja’s dream that the palace used to be a place
for enshrining Buddha’s hair, the king then built a mondapa-shaped
stupa covering it. In 1043 A.D., it became the royal monastery
which located in the heart of Hariphunchai city. At the time of
Chiangmai’s rule, the stupa was renovated into Lanna style. The
stupa is typically built with “Jang-Go” Gold (Copper sheet covered
with gold leaf) with flower design at eight cardinal points and
eight bas-relief roofted-Buddha images in between. There is a
seven-layered golden umbrella (Shatra) at its top. Phra That Hariphunchai
is one of the seven greatest holy sacred places in Thailand. The
Phra That is a horoscope of cock’s year.
